After receiving his degree from Harvard University in 1931, Architect R. Lloyd Snedaker, FAIA, designed three homes on large adjacent lots on Eleventh Ave. He took the middle lot for his own. Having married the boss's daughter before leaving Boston for Salt Lake City, Lloyd remained mindful of his bride's Massachusetts roots. Thus, he crafted a tight, shingled, New England cottage for her to call home. It was remarked years later that the three neighboring houses didn't necessarily look like the work of the same architect, to which Lloyd replied, Except for the fact that they all have a trimness to them, I don't see very much resemblance. That pleases me. During more than 30 years in practice, Lloyd was responsible for over 100 private residences in the Intermountain West. He was the architect for major structures on the University of Utah and Utah State University campuses, the complete interior remodeling and restoration of the Utah State Capitol Building, and he served as part of the team that designed and supervised the construction of the Salt Lake City Federal Building. In 1965, he received the high honor of being raised to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. The Cape Cod is a quintessential all-American architectural style, as classic as a polo shirt with its signature embroidered pony. We all know it when we see one, and we're all held sway by the dreamy seaside imagery they conjure. This charming example in the Upper Avenues is no exception.
